HML504 Financial Management in Health Services (8)

This subject provides students with an opportunity to explore future trends and challenges in health care funding and to learn to develop budgetary strategies and financial management strategies. Students develop a business plan related to their current or future health management or leadership context and role, learn how to respond to challenging financial circumstances and to present a cogent argument for a renegotiated budget.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to critically analyse future trends and challenges in health care funding;
  • be able to create strategies for operational budget and non-budget control;
  • be able to plan and manage a financial budget through the application of key accounting principles and financial management tools;
  • be able to develop financial strategies for challenging circumstances and present a cogent argument for a renegotiated budget; and
  • be able to write a business plan.

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Health care funding internationally;
  • Health care funding models;
  • Trends and challenges in health care funding;
  • Strategies for budget control and for working within a budget;
  • Managing a budget under challenging circumstances;
  • Renegotiating budgets; and
  • Accounting principles and financial management tools.
