In this subject, students will develop practical insights into real-world research writing and dissemination processes. Students will develop a deeper understanding of the world of professional research by working through the process of writing a research report for (potential) publication, under the guidance of their research supervisor(s).  Students will also present this research orally to an audience of interested end-users or stakeholders.

Assumed Knowledge

Students enrolling in this subject are expected to have previously completed or be concurrently completing an Honours research project.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to explain factors that can influence a researcher's choice of knowledge dissemination methods, including the selection of a suitable scholarly journal;
  • be able to orally communicate their research progress and/or outcomes to an interested audience;
  • be able to, with supervisory guidance, write a potentially publishable report on a completed research project, including the rationale, methodology, and findings, and a discussion of relevant limitations and implications; and
  • be able to demonstrate capacity for future higher-degree research by showing the personal initiative and time management skills required to write a research dissertation within a given time frame.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Considerations when choosing avenues for disseminating research findings;
  • Considerations when choosing a journal in which to publish research findings;
  • Advice for preparing and delivering an oral research presentation; and
  • Self-management tips for writing your research dissertation.
