HRT301 Plant Propagation (8)

In this subject, students will explore the principles and practices associated with the commercial propagation of plants. Students will develop their understanding in the biology of plant propagation by examining a range of techniques such as seed and cutting propagation, budding and grafting, separation and division as well as micro-propagation techniques such as tissue culture. The combination of theoretical knowledge and hands-on practical experience provides students with real-world applications in production horticulture.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to examine theoretical aspects of a variety of sexual and asexual plant propagation techniques;
  • be able to evaluate the relative advantages and disadvantages of various plant propagation techniques; and
  • be able to display practical proficiency in a variety of plant propagation techniques.

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Seed propagation;
  • Cutting propagation;
  • Layering;
  • Budding and grafting: bench and field techniques;
  • Propagation using bulbs, corms, tubers, etc; and
  • Tissue culture propagation.

Residential School

This subject contains a 3 day Compulsory Residential School.

The residential school will consist of tutorials, experiments, demonstrations and excursions concerning:

  1. Seed collection and propagation;
  2. Cuttings propagation;
  3. Bulbs and corns, separation and division;
  4. Field grafting and budding; and
  5. Tissue culture propagation.
