INF459 Designing and Creating Usable Websites (8)

This subject introduces the web technologies used to manage information in today's digitally connected world and explains the importance of web usability in the design and development of a website. Students will research and learn the concepts, tools and techniques of website creation, design and some practical applications while taking into consideration the organisational contexts and design standards to effectively transmit and share information. Learning will also focus on user behaviour, user needs, information content and use, and other design factors to make the online content informative and engaging so that it attracts and holds website visitors' attention. Therefore, practical knowledge of fundamental web design concepts and their application in real world context is the main focus of this subject.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to analyse, evaluate and select appropriate web design elements and features for creating, transmitting and sharing information;
  • be able to research and apply good design techniques to improve readability, user friendliness, and general usability of online content;
  • be able to evaluate different aspects of web interface design to ensure effective information retrieval and effective information delivery;
  • be able to critically analyse the organisational context to reflect upon and synthesise issues that affect web design and publishing; and
  • be able to apply web design standards to create a website for specialist and non-specialist audiences.
