ISL353 World Religions in Australia (8)

This subject will address the changes in the Australian religious landscape from the arrival of the First Fleet to the present time. It will also cover the core teachings, practices and history of Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Aboriginal spiritualities and new age within the Australian context. The contribution of religion to the Australian way of life will also be critically discussed. Finally, the history of Muslims in Australia from the Afghan cameleers to larger waves of migration in the multicultural era will be covered.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  • be able to articulate critically the major events and milestones in Australian history and their impact on the religious landscape
  • be able to demonstrate an appreciation of Aboriginal history and religious beliefs
  • be able to demonstrate appreciation of the beliefs and practices of Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism and Hinduism
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of new age spiritualities
  • be able to discuss critically the migration of Muslims to Australia and development of the Australian Muslim community
  • be able to demonstrate critical ability to deduct theological, legal and spiritual meanings from the Qur'anic verses by following exegetical methodology

  • Christianity, Core Beliefs and Practices
  • Judaism, Core Beliefs and Practices
  • Hinduism, Core Beliefs and Practices
  • Buddhism, Core Beliefs and Practices
  • New Religious Movements of the Twentieth Century
  • The Future of Religions in Australia and the Role of Interfaith Dialogue
