ISL481 Philosophy of Prophet Muhammad's Life (Sirah) (8)

This subject discusses the life of the Prophet Muhammad, including pre-Islamic Arabia, early life before prophethood, the Meccan period, migration to Medina and the major events which took place in Medina. These events will be studied and analysed in the context of today's world, making correlations and evaluations as a result. The social transformations during his lifetime, and the dynamics that were to shape human history will also be addressed. The character and personality of Prophet Muhammad will be analysed, as well as contemporary critcisms made about the Prophet.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate in-depth understanding of the main events in the life of the Prophet Muhammad and the unfolding of a Muslim community.
  • be able to analyse critically the social transformations during his lifetime and their implication on the Muslim world today.
  • be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the different roles Prophet Muhammad assumed during his life.
  • be able to evaluate critically common misconceptions about Prophet Muhammad.
  • be able to demonstrate independent research, organisation, written and oral communication skills through the presentation of a substantial work.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Arabia before Islam and the birth of Muhammad; predictions of Prophet Muhammad in the scriptures
  • His life before prophethood; religious and sociopolitical context in Arabia and the greater Middle East
  • Beginning of prophethood and the first Muslims; evidence for authenticity of his prophethood
  • Propagation of Islam in Mecca and persecution of Muslims; Muslims living as a minority
  • Economic and social sanctions towards Muslims; the Sunnah of dealing with sanctions
  • Hijrah (migration) to Medina and its significance; then and now
  • Social reforms and marriages of the Prophet
  • The Battles of Badr, Uhud and the Trench; the role of warfare and its guidelines
  • Treaty of Hudaybiya; the diplomacy of Prophet Muhammad
  • Conquest of Mecca; the spread of Islam
  • Year of deputations, Tabuk expedition
  • Farewell pilgrimage and the passing of the Prophet
