ISL485 Guided Arabic Reading (8)

This subject aims to explore various aspects and considerations of perusing Arabic texts. Students will explore frequently used words, phrases and expressions in the Arabic language. Different genres of texts from Arabic fiction and non-fiction will be studied, compared and contrasted to demonstrate the students' comprehension. Students will continue to advance their knowledge in vocabulary, syntax and morphology as well as continue to access non-vowelised texts.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to use various kinds of dictionaries to understand meanings of words in their context of use;
  • be able to identify and demonstrate understanding of frequently used Arabic phrases and expressions;
  • be able to demonstrate measurable improvement in analysis and composition of sentences and paragraphs; and
  • be able to demonstrate comprehension of texts by comparing and contrasting content from the same genre.

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Selected readings from Arabic fiction
  • Selected readings from Arabic non-fiction
  • Selected readings from classical Islamic texts

Residential School

This subject contains a 2 day Optional Residential School.

The residential school will be held for two days at a confirmed date and location. Students will be given exercises and activities to work on in pairs and in groups. Students will be given selected passages from fiction and non-fiction texts and will be asked to translate them. Along with translation, students will also explore new words, phrases and expressions.
