Young People and Crime examines the relationship between young people and the criminal justice system. This subject considers how children and young people are understood and responded to by various criminal justice agents and institutions. Students will examine key legal, policy, and theoretical frameworks concerning juvenile justice and welfare agencies and will evaluate key juvenile interventions including alternative practices.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to describe the historical foundations of contemporary systems of juvenile justice and child welfare;
  • be able to employ appropriate criminological theory to examine explanations and responses to juvenile offending;
  • be able to describe the contemporary statutory frameworks governing young people;
  • be able to evaluate the effectiveness of current juvenile justice practices, institutional frameworks and principal sites of intervention into the lives of young people including Indigenous young people; and
  • be able to identify and evaluate alternatives to judicially processing young offenders, specifically focusing on pre-trial diversion, cautioning schemes, youth conferencing and other community based prevention and control initiatives

  • Crime prevention, diversion and youth crime
  • Young people and victimology
