JST353 Contemporary and Emerging Issues in Crime and Justice (8)

This Applied Criminology Subject seeks to address a series of contemporary and emerging issues in criminology and criminal justice. Various aspects of the criminal justice system (CJS), both in Australia and internationally, along with the broader socio-political context in which the systems operate, will be considered.The subject further seeks to extend upper level student knowledge of criminology and criminal justice to contemporary and emerging domestic and international issues relevant to professional practice, focussing on the most cutting edge innovations in the field. Students will be exposed to a range of contemporary and emerging issues in crime and justice in which the impact on private individuals, communities, corporate entities, government, law enforcement agencies, regulatory agencies and the criminal justice system will be examined. Students will apply theoretical and practical approaches in considering issues such as modern slavery, Trafficking in Cultural Property, Risk Screening and Creative Corrections.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to analyse various criminological problems and their resolutions both at a theoretical and practical level;
  • be able to analyse and evaluate strengths and weaknesses in the CJS response and provisions for each issue;
  • be able to explain and analyse the interaction between criminological theory and policy;
  • be able to analyse and evaluate strengths and weaknesses of research in the areas being studied.
  • be able to explain and analyse the interaction between policy and research; and
  • be able to demonstrate an awareness of the fluid nature of the discipline.
