They will develop an understanding and explore ways of ethically responding to culturally diverse ways of conducting business. Major ethical theories are studied and applied to a range of business issues, including corporate social responsibility, ethics in the workplace, and discrimination. Environmental sustainability is considered from ethical, business and cultural perspectives.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to outline ethical theories in western moral philosophy and apply them in inter and intra cultural organisational contexts;
  • be able to resolve a range of real life ethical dilemmas;
  • be able to describe the issues and critique the debates associated with the concept of corporate social responsibility in a global business environment;
  • be able to critically reflect on the effects of climate change, ecology and the environment in a global business context;
  • be able to distinguish different views of justice, and outline opposing arguments about justice and economic distribution;
  • be able to critically reflect on their role as business professionals and how their future actions as business professionals can affect society in positive and negative ways.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • globalisation and the business environment;
  • culture and social environments;
  • the nature of ethics, ethical theories in western moral philosophy, and their use in dealing with ethical dilemmas in local and global contexts;
  • issues and debates associated with the concept of corporate social responsibility and the impact this may have on society both within the local community and across cultures;
  • ethical issues affecting employees and other stakeholders in mono-cultural, multi-cultural and diverse workplaces;
  • the application of ethical theories to cultural issues and how these can be applied to working with other cultures;
  • environmental and economic sustainable practices;
  • the role of business professionals in promoting social justice and equality.
