MIN403 Christian Chaplaincy in Context (8)

This subject focuses on the role and function of the Chaplain in institutional and workplace settings; the development of a theological framework for chaplaincy; exploration of professional and personal issues and their bearing upon ethical practice; the goals and tasks of the chaplain; and the challenging issues that arise in the chaplaincy context. In addition, this subject introduces students to critical reflection on their own experience of being a Religious Practitioner in their chosen field of specialisation, and it integrates theological reflection with theory, professional issues, vocational observations and professional practice.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to reflect critically on the role and function of the chaplain in institutional and workplace settings;
  • be able to articulate a well-developed theology of workplace chaplaincy;
  • be able to integrate and apply pastoral care theory with the function and role of the chaplain;
  • be able to exhibit an in-depth understanding of the role of the chaplain in diverse contexts, and the application of that understanding to the practice of the ministerial profession;
  • be able to evaluate critically professional issues in chaplaincy;
  • be able to reflect critically on their own experiences of being a Religious Practitioner in their chosen field of specialisation; and
  • be able to demonstrate skill in analysis of their strengths and growth areas as a Religious Practitioner in their chosen field.

Residential School

This subject contains a 2 day Compulsory Residential School.

For online students a two-day residential school is necessary to participate in skills-based workshops for applying pastoral care theories to institutional and workplace challenges, reflection on practice, and the application of analytical skills to context specific case studies in an encounter group setting.

Special Resources

For online students, travel and accommodation are needed to attend the compulsory residential school.
