In this subject students explore the principles of physics that underpin radiation therapy and instrumentation. They develop their understanding of the links between clinical practice and the instrumentation used in radiation oncology including considerations of radiation safety, regulatory requirements, quality assurance, dosimetry and planning systems.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to describe and explain the principles of physics and instrumentation with regards to linear accelerators, brachytherapy, gamma knife, superficial, orthovoltage, cyber-knife, proton therapy and tomo-therapy (MRPBA Domain 1.3);
  • be able to describe and apply understanding of practice in radiation therapy with specific reference to appropriate use of stabilisation devices, application of treatment simulation techniques, knowledge and application of treatment planning and dosimetry, implement CT imaging, demonstrate understanding of the role of MRI and PET in simulation imaging and implementation of treatment techniques according to approved plans (MRPBA Domain 1C);
  • be able to apply the principles of evidence based practice and professional learning with specific reference to critical and reflective thinking to resolve clinical challenges, research and empirical practice, and academic and professional discourse (MRPBA Domain 4); and
  • be able to describe and apply the principles of radiation safety and risk management with specific reference to safe radiation practice, protecting/enhancing patient safety, maintain safety of self and others and safely managing radiation and radioactivity (MRPBA Domain 5).

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Radiation safety;
  • Statutory and regulatory requirements for receipt, handling, management and disposal of radiation;
  • Instrumentation; linear accelerators, superficial, orthovoltage, brachytherapy, gamma knife, cyber-knife, proton therapy, tomo-therapy;
  • Physics;
  • Quality Assurance;
  • Dosimetry; and
  • Planning systems.
