MRS528 Clinical Education and Supervision in Medical Radiation Science (16)

This subject will explore the fundamental principles of clinical supervision and their role in this facet of advanced Medical Radiation practice. Students will critically evaluate supervision and support strategies in the Medical Radiation clinical setting including student and peer assessment, mentorship and developmental support. A focus of this subject will be the enrichment of clinical supervisors understanding of the principles and practice of assessment in relation to Medical Radiation students clinical capability.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to organise and implement an advanced evidence-based program of supervision and mentorship for students in the workplace;
  • be able to apply principles of adult learning to workplace learning in the Medical Radiation Sciences;
  • be able to differentiate the concepts of clinical competence and clinical capability in the context of Medical Radiation practice;
  • be able to formulate strategies to apply the principles of assessment in the workplace and appropriately assess clinical capability;
  • be able to apply research-based approaches to meet the diverse needs of students in the clinical supervision environment and integrate culturally safe practices of supervision and assessment; and
  • be able to formulate appropriate strategies to effectively supervise students and deliver feedback to students and education providers.

  • Pedagogy and andragogy;
  • Self-directed learning;
  • Student-centred learning;
  • Supporting adult learners in the workplace; and
  • Cultural safety and diversity in learning.
  • MODULE 2: SUPERVISION
  • Teaching with a caseload;
  • Delivering timely feedback;
  • Interprofessional learning;
  • Effective mentoring; and
  • Emotional intelligence, cultural awareness and sensitivity, and the power relationship.
  • MODULE 3: ASSESSMENT OF WORKPLACE LEARNING
  • Competence and capability;
  • The role of professional judgement;
  • Standard setting and assessment criteria;
  • The role of latent criteria; and
  • Psychometric assessment scales vs descriptive assessment scales.
