MRS598 Advanced Principles in Computed Tomography (16)

This subject covers the concepts of physics and instrumentation in the field of computed tomography (CT). It briefly reviews the foundational physics principles of CT and considers the physics of advanced principles and techniques. The subject will extensively cover image quality parameters and other quality factors in CT. It will cover such areas as Dual-Energy CT (DECT), Cone-Beam CT (CBCT), 4D CT and image reconstruction; modern tube designs and other associated instrumentation, such as pressure injectors. Radiation dosimetry in CT, methods of measurement and relationship to image quality will be covered with emphasis on justification and optimisation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to discuss and apply the basic principles of CT in making clinical decisions;
  • be able to explain and communicate the principles of modern scanners and detector configurations to non-specialist audiences;
  • be able to critically discuss the differences between image reconstruction methods and reformatting options;
  • be able to solve problems regarding the interaction of primary image quality factors and their impact on radiation dose;
  • be able to discuss the primary radiation dosimetry measures and justify how they can be used to improve practices in CT; and
  • be able to analyse, review and synthesise appropriate literature in relation to current CT practice and Medical Radiation's interdisciplinary learning.
