NRS575 Leadership and Clinical Governance in Aged Care (4)

The subject is designed for nursing leaders, clinicians and managers within aged care and will enable them to develop their leadership capacity in a way that leads to transformative change. Students will explore and integrate clinical governance principles with transformative leadership approaches that support their current or future roles as leaders and managers in aged-care facilities and services  Students will explore the role of the nurse leader in administering ethical, legal and professional standards in the aged-care setting and develop their ability to implement and evaluate quality improvement in their workplace.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to analyse the principles of clinical governance and how they apply to nursing practice;
  • be able to solve complex problems relevant to aged care and clinical governance;
  • be able to implement and evaluate a quality improvement framework relevant to their workplace/an Aged Care facility with the aim to improve clinical governance and person-centred outcomes;
  • be able to examine the role of leadership in administering legal, ethical and professional standards using clinical governance principles; and
  • be able to critically reflect on the development of personal knowledge and skills in solving complex nursing problems related to clinical governance.

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Origins and purpose of clinical governance;
  • Frameworks of clinical governance;
  • Implementing clinical governance in aged care settings;
  • Evaluating methods in clinical governance;
  • Legal and ethical considerations in the application of clinical governance;
  • Models of transformational leadership in aged care settings; and
  • Support systems for leaders.
