NRS577 Leading Healthcare Improvement (8)

This subject focuses on nurse leadership in the context of healthcare improvement and is designed for nursing leaders, clinicians and managers at all levels in healthcare to enable them to develop their leadership capacity in a way that leads to transformative change. Students will investigate and apply core concepts related to nursing leadership and develop strategies for supporting staff development and performance management. Students will also develop capacity to initiate, plan, implement and evaluate safety and quality improvement initiatives, and solve complex nursing problems in diverse settings.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to analyse competencies needed for leading complex systems, including environmental scanning and strategic management strategies;
  • be able to investigate and reflect on the concept of a Learning Health System and how it can be applied to the student's workplace;
  • be able to compare and contrast strategies for supporting staff development and performance management;
  • be able to examine the concept of psychological safety and analyse how it applies to staff wellbeing;
  • be able to critically analyse and apply advanced knowledge and skills to support leadership and education within the discipline of nursing and relevant to advancing practice in the chosen specialty area;
  • be able to initiate, plan, implement and evaluate safety and quality frameworks to improve health outcomes within diverse practice settings;
  • be able to investigate processes for leading healthcare improvement initiatives as a core leadership role for nurses; and
  • be able to interpret, translate and communicate advanced knowledge and apply specialised skills to independently and collaboratively solve complex nursing problems in diverse settings.

  • Defining, measuring and improving quality in healthcare - nurses role in leading improvement; and
  • Key competencies for today's healthcare leaders.
