In this subject we think philosophically about some of the biggest practical issues that give shape to peoples lives. Examples include the following: Should you have children? Should you fear death? Should you get married? What forms of sex are morally permissible?

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate a significant degree of understanding of philosophical techniques of analysis and argument;
  • be able to demonstrate a significant degree of understanding of the practice of addressing ethical problems; and
  • be able to apply their skills of analysis and argument and their understanding of theories to the clarification and resolution of the particular practical moral problems/issues addressed in the Syllabus.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Applications: Practical moral problems/issues concerning the beginning of human life, the end of human life, entering into and maintaining loving relationships with others, entering into and maintaining sexual relationships with others.
  • Philosophical Theory: The analysis and evaluation of philosophical arguments concerning the practical problems addressed.
