This subject introduces students to the practice of analogue photography and the role that it played in shaping modern photographic practices. This will be underpinned by critical analyses of historical and contemporary photographic practices and an exploration of the analogue camera. Students will experience hands-on learning that will immerse thems in analogue and experimental photographic techniques.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to skilfully demonstrate the fundamentals of representation, aesthetics and meaning in photographic imagery;
  • be able to proficiently prepare photographic work for presentation in a range of analogue formats;
  • be able to determine appropriate photographic techniques and independently operate in a range of environments;
  • be able to demonstrate a deep knowledge of the principles and workings of selected analogue photographic processes;
  • be able to critically analyse photographic works in terms of their historical and contemporary provenance, and;
  • be able to employ current concepts of photographic analysis.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • History of analogue photographic practices
  • The development of photographic technology in contemporary analogue photography
  • Critical analysis of photography practices
  • Chemical processes producing fixed images
  • The negative, film and development
  • Fundamentals of analogue photography practices
  • Analogue printing techniques
  • The manipulation of the negative and positive image
  • Experimental photography: understanding various tools in producing the image

Special Resources

On campus students at Wagga Wagga will be required to access University provided photographic darkroom facilities to complete assessment tasks.
