POD316 Sports Medicine and Electrophysical Agents (8)

This subject will extend the student's knowledge of lower extremity conditions associated with participation in sport and physical activity. Students will develop knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of a broad range of athletes, including a number of specific populations. Students will also be introduced to therapeutic modalities using a range of digital technologies in the assessment and management of biomechanical and sporting injuries.

Restricted to students in Bachelor of Podiatric Medicine, Bachelor of Podiatric Medicine (Honours), Bachelor of Physiotherapy and Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours)

Assumed Knowledge

Foundational knowledge of physiology, musculoskeletal pathology, neuroscience and biomechanics.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to apply fundamental sports medicine principles to acute and overuse injuries affecting the lower extremity in order to enhance sporting performance
  • be able to evaluate the special needs of targeted groups of athletes including the younger athlete, the female athlete, the older athlete and the athlete with disability, as a means of enabling ongoing and sustainable participation
  • be able to use an evidence based approach to analyse the impact and management of acute and chronic conditions arising due to exercise
  • be able to explain the ethical and practical application of therapeutic modalities used to manage sports injuries in professional practice (heat and cold, electrophysical, pharmacological, and orthomechanical therapies), correctly calculate dosages, and demonstrate their safe use
  • be able to competently use digital technologies as a means of performing clinical assessment and reporting clinical findings
  • be able to justify appropriate prescription, dosage calculation, and sustainable use of medicines for the management of musculoskeletal conditions
