PSY429 Contemporary Topics in Psychology (8)

The aim of this subject is to allow students to explore contemporary empirical and theoretical topics in psychology. The subject will consist of six seminars delivered by research staff in the school and students will prepare by reading articles set by the relevant staff member. It will provide higher level critical analytic skills that will prepare students for engagement in research and practice in the science of psychology.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the theoretical and substantive issues relating to contemporary empirical and theoretical topics in psychology;
  • be able to demonstrate effective research skills; and
  • be able to demonstrate higher level critical analytic skills and the ability to produce an original and coherent argument.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • The syllabus will be based on the current research interests of the relevant academic staff member(s) each year, and will focus on the core areas of the discipline and science of psychology as follows:
  • Applied psychology (including educational and forensic psychology);
  • Biological psychology;
  • Clinical and health psychology;
  • Developmental psychology;
  • Experimental psychology; and
  • Social and personality psychology.
