PSY569 Psychological Practice and Research 2 (8)

This is the second of two 150 hour placements which students are required to undertake in an area of professional psychology practice. It introduces students to the core elements of professional psychological practice.

Students also submit a written empirical single-case report, based on the placement experience, through which they demonstrate competence in taking an evidence-based approach to psychological practice, from the point of initial assessment, to reporting treatment outcomes, and professional and personal reflections on the case.

As professional placements may be undertaken in any of a variety of settings (public health, forensic institutions, educational organisations, private practices etc), the specific content of the placement will be negotiated between the external placement supervisor and the student, and will be approved by the School of Psychologys Placement Coordinator.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate applied knowledge of theories of psychopathology;
  • be able to demonstrate proficiency in applied psychological assessment;
  • be able to demonstrate proficiency in diagnosis and case formulation;
  • be able to demonstrate competence in adopting an evidence - based approach to psychological practice through completion of a single case report, systematic review or meta-analysis that addresses a substantive research question.
  • be able to demonstrate proficiency in the delivery of evidence-based psychological interventions, and the conduct of appropriate evaluation of outcome;
  • be able to conduct practice in accordance with professional and ethical standards; and
  • be able to demonstrate competence in the investigation of research questions in psychology using an evidence-based approach.

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 20 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

Students attend an approved location to complete a professional placement, under the supervision of a CSU-approved registered psychologist who is currently approved as a supervisor approved by the Psychology Board of Australia.
