SPH211 Language Impairments in Children and Adolescents (8)

In this subject students will study language / learning delays and impairments in childhood and adolescence. This subject deals with approaches to the assessment and management of language / learning delays and impairments from an individual, family and community/environment perspective. Students will be introduced to models of practice including, family-centred practice and collaborative practice as well as expanding their knowledge and application of frameworks for practice including the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health and the Clinical-Based Occupational Standards for entry-level speech pathologists of Speech Pathology Australia. Students will engage with the assessment and intervention of individuals/families/communities focussing on a range of impairments including specific language impairment and learning difficulties from infancy onwards, as well as health promotion.

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Childhood language impairments and delays from infancy through to adolescence.
  • Learning difficulties with a language basis and specific language impairment.
  • Assessment of childhood and adolescent language
  • Intervention methods for language delays and impairments in childhood and adolescence
  • Models of Speech Pathology practice in childhood and adolescence
  • Approaches to environmental assessment and intervention and health promotion regarding language development of infants, children and adolescents
