SPH317 Aphasia and Cognitive Communication (8)

In this subject, students will develop their knowledge and skills in the practice areas of acquired language and cognitive communication disorders caused by neurological illness such as stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), progressive neurological diseases and dementia. Students will explore the causes, effects and impact of these acquired disorders utilising the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework to guide their learning. Assessment and intervention approaches for the areas of acquired language disorders and cognitive communication disorders will be explored and applied to cases to develop application of theory to practice.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology and neurology to explore and plan assessment for people with acquired language and cognitive communication disorders
  • be able to apply knowledge of assessment and the ICF framework to differentially diagnose disorders of acquired language and cognitive communication, and understand their impact on a person's overall wellbeing
  • be able to apply clinical reasoning to develop holistic intervention plans for individuals presenting with language and cognitive communication disorders
  • be able to evaluate and modify intervention based on knowledge of the literature, as well as the individual's needs

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • The neuropsychological and neurolinguistic foundations (including the history) of research, assessment and treatment of neurogenic communication disorders
  • Major categories of neurological impairment resulting in language disorders and disorders of cognition from a cognitive neuropsychological and clinical perspective
  • Theoretical and practical approaches to the assessment of acquired language disorders and cognitive communication disorders, as well as approaches to planning and delivery of intervention for these disorders
