Essay Writing 1 - Style aims to provide students with the key skills required to write essays successfully at university. The subject content covers the broad academic category of style with a focus on complexity and formality, referencing, punctuation and grammar. There is an emphasis on practice activities and short online tests to check for understanding of the concepts presented.This subject is the foundation subject for the writing of essays at university level. It is recommended that students progress beyond this subject to Essay Writing 2: Structure and then Essay Writing 3: Putting it into Practice. Each subject provides a building block in preparation for the writing of essays at university level.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify the features of academic writing;
  • be able to use the conventions of academic writing to produce texts;
  • be able to write a variety of simple, compound and complex sentences;
  • be able to write formal and complex structures, where appropriate;
  • be able to identify some basic grammatical terms and understand their relevance to formal academic writing;
  • be able to use punctuation to organise meaning in a text and be able to edit a text to ensure that correct punctuation is used;
  • be able to identify the purpose of referencing at university;
  • be able to apply the principles of referencing correctly to produce correct in-text references and an end-of-text reference list; and
  • be able to find resources or services that support further development in academic writing skills.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Introduction to the subject and writing essays ( 2hrs)
  • Grammar (2 hrs)
  • Formality in academic writing (2 hrs)
  • Complexity in academic writing (2 hrs)
  • Punctuation (2 hrs)
  • APA style referencing (2 hrs) including paraphrasing, use of direct quotes, in-text referencing and end-of-text reference lists
