Essay Writing 2 - Structure aims to provide students with the key skills required to write essays successfully at university. The subject content covers the broad academic category of structure, with a focus on writing an essay introduction, body, and conclusion. There is an emphasis on practice activities and short online tests to check for understanding of the concepts presented.This subject is the second in a series on the writing of essays at university level. Each subject provides a building block in preparation for the writing of essays at university level.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify the features of academic writing;
  • be able to use the conventions of academic writing to produce texts;
  • be able to plan and structure a text that presents and supports a point of view based on research;
  • be able to write an introduction to an academic essay;
  • be able to write a coherent body paragraph that includes a topic sentence, elaboration and evidence;
  • be able to integrate sources into a body paragraph;
  • be able to write a concluding paragraph;
  • be able to identify the purpose of referencing at university;
  • be able to apply the principles of referencing correctly to produce correct in-text references and an end-of-text reference list; and
  • be able to find resources or services that support further development in academic writing skills.
