Being able to research is important for success in university study. This subject is designed to introduce the research skills that are essential for university study and that are particularly important for the completion of assessment tasks. Through study of this subject students will learn the skills of research for tertiary study and how to utilise a range of support services.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify the nature, importance and role of research skills in university success;
  • be able to use library resources to locate information and resources;
  • be able to conduct searches and source relevant information;
  • be able to apply skills to the evaluation of sources;
  • be able to access and interpret information represented in a variety of forms; and
  • be able to document research using Charles Sturt University's accepted APA version referencing.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Introducing research skills and why they are important
  • Subject design and your responsibilities with readings, research and assessment tasks
  • Using the library as a resource
  • Defining the topic: working out what you need to research
  • Sources of information: identifying where to find information- books, journal articles, websites, newspaper, audio-visual resources
  • Conducting searches: using key terms, using databases, making contact with primary sources
  • Evaluating sources: the importance of dates, the importance of peer review, primary and secondary sources
  • Documenting research: using APA referencing, record keeping, summarising, interpreting
  • Identifying additional assistance and resources
