This subject enables candidates to begin the process of developing their research topic, in the context of exploring contemporary theory and critically reflecting on their professional practice. Together with their supervisor/s, candidates reflect on the foundations of their research project and develop a plan for progress within the structure of the Doctor of Social Work.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • The research process - requirements, expectations, supervision
  • Articulating the research topic - on an individual basis, in negotiation with candidate's supervisors
  • Contributing to the professional knowledge base
  • Introduction to ontology, axiology, epistemology and methodology
  • Contemporary theory, practice and research paradigms
  • Critical reflective practice in relation to the research topic - in the form of a detailed study and evaluation of trends and developments in the research topic or field of practice
  • Planning the next steps in your research and progress to-date
