This subject explores research methodology, epistemology, axiology and ontology relevant to the candidate's research topic. Opportunities are provided for candidates and their supervisor/s to extend and reflect on the relationship between research ethics and advanced methodological processes required for research and to gauge progress as the foundations of the research project are developed.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  • be able to demonstrate a critical awareness of the principles of ethical social research
  • be able to understand the issues involved in formulating a research question
  • be able to undertake initial planning of a research process to explore a research topic
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of a range of data collection and analysis methods at an advanced level
  • be able to critically evaluate published research
  • be able to identify and use appropriate research tools (software programs such as, but not limited to SPSS, NVivo, and the like)
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of the research process
  • be able to actively and constructively engage with the supervisory team

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • The research process (including supervision)
  • Ontology, axiology, epistemology and methodology of research
  • Principles of ethical social research
  • Developing a research question
  • Quantitative, qualitative and emancipatory research within the social work context
  • Research methods and tools to assist the research project
  • The range of strategies to disseminate research findings to diverse audiences
  • Reviewing progress-to-date and forward-planning
