SWK704 Social Work Research Proposal (16)

In this subject, candidates write a comprehensive research proposal to meet the requirements of the Faculty for confirmation of candidature. The candidate, in consultation with the supervisory team, is required to present their research proposal to a panel of reviewers, and to articulate the potential contribution of their research to knowledge in the field, taking into account principles of ethical research. Candidates, in consultation with the supervisory team, are required to engage constructively with reviewers' comments.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to meet, in consultation with the supervisory team, the Faculty's requirements for presentation of research proposal and the process for confirming candidature
  • be able to demonstrate a high level of skill in writing a research proposal and to articulate the project's potential contribution to knowledge in the field, taking into account principles of ethical social research
  • be able to demonstrate, as part of the proposal, a critical understanding of the key literature in the specified area of research and effective argument/s from that literature to justify the proposed approach to the research
  • be able to demonstrate, as part of the proposal, the methodological knowledge and skills to carry out the proposed research;
  • be able to present the research proposal to a panel of academics and peers
  • be able to engage constructively with recommendations for revision to the research proposal as articulated by reviewers and/or supervisors
  • be able to critically reflect on the research process and progress to-date and to plan for the thesis phase of the professional doctorate

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Preparing to meet the Faculty's requirements for confirmation of candidature
  • Principles of ethical social research
  • Writing the research proposal - articulating the project's potential contribution to knowledge incorporating arguments from the literature reivew and methodological approach
  • Refining and practising presentation skills in preparation for the proposal seminar
  • Critical reflection on how to engage with constructive criticism - reviewers, supervisors and peers
  • Critical reflection on the research process and progress to-date - planning for the thesis phase of your professional doctorate
