This subject allows students to engage with work by prominent Christian ethicists. In particular, students will engage this material with a view to pressing contemporary ethical challenges in Australia and elsewhere. In addition, students will engage with and reflect upon material from a range of different theological perspectives.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to critically analyse a selection of major texts in Christian ethics;
  • be able to reflect critically on the relationship between texts in Christian ethics and their diverse historical and theological contexts;
  • be able to identify and discuss critically the diverse positions and views in contemporary Christian ethics;
  • be able to demonstrate critical reflection on the relationship between texts in Christian ethics; and
  • be able to demonstrate research and writing skills appropriate for theological study at the Masters level.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • The nature and sources of Christian ethics
  • The relationship between systematic theology, Christian ethics and practical theology
  • The emergence of Christian ethics as a distinct subdiscipline within theology
  • The variety of work being done by Christian ethicists today
  • The implications of different theological commitments for concrete ethical action
