This subject introduces students to contemporary performance practices from a theoretical and practical perspective. The subject uses a thematic approach to analyse performance concepts including: postmodern performance, the body as text, post-dramatic theatre and the space and place of performance. Students engage in critical discussion and reflection about the work of leading practitioners and apply their understanding of concepts by creating their own contemporary mediated performance production.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  • Text analysis, research and dramaturgical process in contemporary theatre
  • Performance as community dialogue
  • Radical concepts: Influences and concepts of performance
  • Body Works: An examination of the body as text in physical theatre
  • Hybrid performances: Post dramatic approaches to text
  • Spaces of Engagement: An exploration of festival, online and site-specific performance
  • Creating a mediated performance in the professional theatre environment
  • Working within a collaborative company to professional standards
