This is a research degree for students who have an excellent academic record in education, who have developed expertise in a substantive area of education and who have proven research skills. Candidates are required to develop a research proposal and to concentrate on research for their entire program. Only highly qualified students are considered for candidature.

Admission criteria
Candidates must have:
a Bachelor degree in Education or a cognate discipline at Honours Class 1 or Honours Class 2 Division 1 level plus additional studies, if required, as determined by the Faculty of Education;
or
a Masters degree in Education at Honours level or a Research Masters degree in Education together with additional studies, if required, as determined by the Faculty of Education;
or
a Coursework Masters degree with half the number of subjects completed at an average of Credit or higher and the other half completed at an average of Distinction or higher, provided that the equivalent of three subjects in educational research methodology have been satisfactorily completed and the candidate has proven writing skills (as may be shown through the completion of an independent research project);
or
other qualifications acceptable to the Faculty of Education and the Board of Graduate Studies.
Course requirements
Students will conduct research, under supervision, and submit the results of their investigation in the form of a thesis which will not normally exceed 100 000 words.
