Graduate Diploma of Education (Literacy)


This course is designed to develop expertise in the teaching of reading and writing.

The course integrates theory and practice, and examines:
reading and writing processes;
psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic perspectives of literacy;
whole language teaching strategies which foster children's literacy development;
children's literature;
and
evaluating reading and writing.

Part-time 2 years (4 sessions)

Admission criteria

Teachers with at least a three year Diploma of Teaching and a minimum of two years experience as an educator, teacher-librarian, or counsellor, are eligible to enrol.

Professional recognition

The course provides teachers with the opportunity to increase their status in the teaching profession, obtain four year trained salary, increase eligibility for promotion and gain recognition as a teacher with special professional qualifications.

Course requirements

To graduate, students must satisfactorily complete four compulsory subjects (16 subject points each) to the total value of 64 subject points. There is a strong emphasis on practical experience and students are expected to complete a range of carefully monitored teaching projects.

Residential schools

Residential schools are not compulsory for this course.
