Doctor of Education


The Doctorate in Education is a professionally oriented degree for those who wish to further their careers in education or become professional researchers in educational settings. It is specifically designed for the professional development of those who work in the area of education. It aims to promote an informed and analytical approach to educational thought, practice and evaluation. Theory and research are both included to promote expertise and excellence in an area of educational significance.

Admission criteria

The entry requirements are similar to those for the PhD degree. Additionally, candidates must have been engaged in professional education practice for at least five years.

Candidates must have successfully completed three research methodology subjects (or be able to demonstrate competence in them) prior to admittance to the program; or, in approved cases, complete no more than two of the subjects while enrolled in the program.

Course structure

To graduate, candidates must satisfactorily complete four doctoral subjects and a thesis.

Alternatively, candidates may obtain permission to complete a doctoral subject at another university in lieu of one of the above subjects.

Thesis

Candidates must submit a thesis which will not normally exceed 60 000 words on a subject related to a significant aspect of education.

Residential schools

There are residential requirements in most subjects and candidates must attend for periods of research supervision.
