The Master of Education degree provides a coursework program for professionals who are associated with the practice of education. This includes educators in such fields as:

Teaching
Religious education
Police education
Nurse education
Speech therapy
Counselling/Guidance
Educational administration
Consultancy/Advisory services
Early childhood services
Youth work
Teacher librarianship
Vocational education

Admission criteria

An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree of Master of Education must have at least the following minimum qualifications:
hold the degree of Bachelor of Education from CSU or another tertiary institution;
or
be a graduate from a Degree course or approved Diploma course of CSU and hold the Graduate Diploma of Education (or its equivalent) from CSU or another tertiary institution;
or
possess other qualifications deemed to be equivalent by the Faculty;*
and
have been engaged in appropriate professional experience in education (e.g. 2 years as a teacher, nurse educator, etc);
and
have completed additional qualifying subjects or courses prescribed by Faculty.

* When interpreting these entry requirements, the Faculty normally accepts such alternative four year tertiary qualifications as a first degree plus Teachers Certificate or a Diploma of Teaching and a postgraduate Diploma of Educational Studies.

General

In order to meet requirements for the General program, candidates must complete eight subjects. One subject must be Research Methodology: An Introduction while two other subjects must be chosen from:

The remaining five subjects may be selected from the following list exclusively or may include subjects from one or more of the specialised areas that follow.

Literacy
As well as studying the three mandatory subjects (see General above), students must complete five subjects (40 points) from the following list:

Requirements for further study

If students wish to meet the requirements to proceed at a later stage to a Masters of Education (Honours), Doctor of Education or Doctor of Philosophy program, they should complete and achieve at a high level the three subjects in educational research methodology, viz:

Not all subjects are offered each session. It is possible for students to include in their programs up to two Level 400 subjects. Further advice is available from the Coordinators listed below.

Some subjects have pre- or co-requisites that must be met.

Candidates may choose subjects for which they meet the prerequisites. Those who follow a specialist program should normally choose five of their subjects from the specialist area. Candidates who do not do so will normally revert to the General program.

Candidates may choose up to two subjects from the Master of Education (Special Education) program with approval. It is not possible for candidates in the General program to enrol in a project in the area of special education.

Transfer among postgraduate programs

With the permission of the Faculty and subject to certain stipulations, students may transfer candidature from the Master of Education or the Master of Education (Special Education) degree to the Master of Education (Honours) degree or vice versa with portability of credits gained if appropriate.

Appropriately qualified candidates who are enrolled in the Master of Education (Honours) course and who are performing at a satisfactory level may be permitted to transfer candidature to the Doctor of Philosophy or the Doctor of Education program with portability of credits gained if appropriate.
