Master of Education (Teacher Librarianship)


The Master of Education (Teacher Librarianship) provides four year trained teachers with specialist qualifications in the area of teacher librarianship. This course is targeted to meet the needs of professional teachers who are either
(a) practising teacher librarians without a specialist qualification or (b) practising teachers who wish to move into the field of teacher librarianship. This program is designed to:

encourage and permit critical appraisal of theory and practice in the field of teacher librarianship;
and
improve the educator's professional competence and enlarge the capacity for self development.

This course is taught through the School of Information Studies, Faculty of Science & Agriculture on behalf of the Faculty of Education.

Admission requirements

An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree of Master of Education (Teacher Librarianship) must:

hold the degree of Bachelor of Education; or
be a graduate and hold a Graduate Diploma of Education; or
possess other qualifications deemed to be equivalent by the Faculty; and
have been engaged in appropriate professional experience in education for the equivalent of two full-time years.

No prescribed knowledge is required for entry to this course other than candidates must be qualified teachers. It is desirable that intending candidates have some familiarity with developments in education and recent teaching practice. It will be assumed that candidates are competent users of traditional forms of information technology and are able to access and use a personal computer. Students will be expected to be able to communicate electronically with the University on a regular basis.

Credit for previous study

Credit for previous study in the area of teacher librarianship may be available - refer to Course Coordinator.

Professional recognition

As this course is a new course, formal recognition will be sought during 1997 to allow graduates to be admitted as an Associate of the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).

Course requirements

To graduate, students must satisfactorily complete a minimum of eight subjects (or 64 subject points) and meet practical work as follows:
a professional study visit of four days duration
a professional placement of two weeks

Students will undertake three 400 level subjects and seven 500 level subjects. Two of the 500 level subjects are practical.

Residential school

Optional residential schools are available in most subjects.

Course structure

Some subjects are offered in two of the three sessions each year.
