Admission criteria
Applicants must:
be a graduate, or graduand, from a degree level course at a recognised tertiary institution in an area of specialisation acceptable to the University;*
or
furnish documentary evidence which demonstrates to the satisfaction of the Dean of the Faculty of Education that equivalent requirements to those set out above have been met.
* The University shall ensure, to the best of its ability, the area of discipline specialisation is acceptable to an appropriate employer by meeting minimal academic requirements for employment as a secondary teacher of:
Agriculture
Art
Drama
English
Human Society and its Environment
(Geography, History, Economics)
LOTE
Mathematics
Personal Development/Health/Physical Education
Science
Teacher Librarianship
Course requirements
To graduate, students must satisfactorily complete 8 eight-point subjects (64 subject points). Students may be provided with a mixed mode program in order to fit with commitments outside study. Such programs will be negotiated individually with the appropriate Course Coordinator.
Residential schools
Compulsory residential schools for distance education students will be held on campus in the first two sessions of enrolment. These residential schools will normally be held in conjunction with school holidays.
NOTE: not all subjects are available in both the on campus and distance education mode.
*EML427 is a prerequisite for EML428

PD/Health/PE students complete EMR402 as their Session 1 option. They then enrol in EMR403 in Session 2.

Distance education students may negotiate a program acceptable to the Course Coordinator that involves more than two subjects per session.
PD/Health/PE students complete EMR402 as their Session 3 option. They then enrol in EMR403 in Session 4
Practicum
Internal students will complete a minimum eight weeks of practicum experience. This will be split into the equivalent of four weeks in Session 1 and a minimum of four weeks in Session 2.
Experience in Session 1 will involve classes at the junior secondary level, while Session 2 will also involve senior secondary classes.
In the first teaching practice students will concentrate on:
planning, implementing and evaluating lessons;
and
classroom management.
Students are also expected to collect information relating to:
adolescent conceptual and physical development;
the relationship between the school and its community, especially the rural community;
and
individual differences of students.
Students must satisfy both the academic and practical components of EPT401 Practice of Teaching 1, before progressing to the practical component of EPT402 Practice of Teaching 2. In addition students should have satisfactorily completed a relevant Curriculum Studies 1 subject.
Session 2 teaching practice will involve a mixture of classes at the junior and senior secondary level. Students will be expected to concentrate on:
planning, implementing and evaluating units of work;
classroom management;
whole school management and pupil welfare;
and
cultural and individual differences.
Students are also expected to collect information relating to:
across curriculum perspectives;
teacher roles outside the classroom;
and
school and faculty organisation and management.
Distance education students will complete a minimum of eight weeks practicum over the two years of the course, arranged in consultation with the Practicum Coordinator. Students may complete five weeks in their second practicum to qualify them for registration in Victoria.
