Graduate Diploma of Education (Primary)


This course is offered on a fee-paying basis for overseas students only. The course commenced mid year (i.e. July) 1995.

Admission criteria

Applicants must:
be a graduate, or graduand, from a degree level course at a recognised tertiary institution;
or
furnish documentary evidence which demonstrates to the satisfaction of the Dean of the Faculty of Education that equivalent requirements to those set out in (a) have been met.

Course requirements

To graduate, students must satisfactorily complete 64 subject points; that is, eight subjects each worth eight subject points. Students must also satisfactorily complete a minimum of eight weeks of teaching practice, four weeks in Session 1 and four weeks in Session 2.

There are no residential schools required in this course.

Session 1

Session 2

Practicum

Students will complete a minimum eight weeks of practicum experience. This will be split into four weeks in Session 1 and a minimum of four weeks in Session 2.

Practicum 1

In the first teaching practice students will concentrate on:
planning, implementing and evaluating lessons;
classroom management and collecting information relating to: child conceptual and physical development; the relationship between the school and its community; and individual differences of students.

Practicum 2

In the second teaching practice session students will be expected to concentrate on:
planning, implementing and evaluating units of work;
classroom management;
whole school management and pupil welfare;
cultural and individual differences and collecting information relating to: across curriculum perspectives; teacher roles outside the classroom; and school and faculty organisation and management.

Students are encouraged to undertake their second practicum in alternative locations: rural and remote areas, schools with a high Aboriginal population, schools in traditional Aboriginal communities, inner city urban locations or in schools with a high population of children from non-English speaking backgrounds. Under certain circumstances, students may be able to undertake their second practicum in overseas countries such as the Solomon Islands, Malaysia or Indonesia. Such practicums may also be undertaken as additional to the minimum eight weeks.
