Doctor of Philosophy


This is a research degree for students who have an excellent academic record in health sciences, who have developed expertise in a substantive area of health and who have proven research skills. Candidates are required to develop a research proposal and to concentrate on research for their entire program.

Admission criteria

An applicant to the Doctor of Philosophy degree must hold:

an undergraduate degree with honours in the health sciences or a related field;
or
hold a Masters degree with honours, or equivalent, in the health sciences or a related field.

Applicants must have already completed appropriate research methods subjects, show evidence of research experience in the health sciences and have been engaged in appropriate professional experience in the health sciences or a related field for the equivalent of at least two full-time years.

Course requirements

Under guidance from their supervisors, students are required to determine an area of study apposite to the Faculty's designated fields of research, prepare a research proposal and, where appropriate, obtain ethics approval(s), conduct a research investigation, write a thesis and submit the thesis for examination.

The major research opportunities include nursing, health services management and biomedical science.
