prepares educators to conduct, interpret, and apply educational research;
provides the opportunity to investigate a research problem in-depth;
and
provides research training for doctoral programs.

Admission criteria

An applicant for admission to the Honours program must:

hold the degree of Bachelor of Education with Honours from CSU or from another tertiary institution; or
hold the degree of Bachelor with Honours from another Faculty of CSU and hold a Diploma in Education from CSU; or hold similar qualifications from another tertiary institution; or
hold a Masters degree in Education (with meritorious performance) from CSU or from another tertiary institution; or
possess qualifications considered by the Faculty to be equivalent to those specified above;

and

have completed any additional qualifying subjects or courses prescribed by the Faculty.

Candidates for the Honours degree are expected to:

have an undergraduate academic record at an average of Credit or above;
and
successfully complete as part of their Honours candidature, or prove competence in, three subjects in educational research methodology;
prove competence in the area in which the research is to be conducted;
and
submit an acceptable research proposal which incorporates a preliminary review of the literature in the field of study.

Course structure

Working with a supervisor, a candidate must:

determine an area of study;
prepare a research proposal;
conduct appropriate research;
write a thesis under supervision;
and
submit the thesis for examination.

The thesis counts as 64 points and is the sole basis for the award of the level of Honours. Students may study in any area acceptable to the Faculty and for which there is supervision available.

Students may have to meet additional coursework requirements as determined by the Faculty Board.

Transfer among postgraduate programs

With the permission of the Faculty, and subject to certain stipulations, students may transfer candidature from the Master of Education or the Master of Education (Special Education) degree to the Master of Education (Honours) degree or vice versa with portability of credits gained if appropriate.

Appropriately qualified candidates who are enrolled in the Master of Education (Honours) course and who are performing at a satisfactory level may be permitted to transfer candidature to the Doctor of Philosophy or the Doctor of Education program with portability of credits gained if appropriate.
