Bachelor of Theology

The Bachelor of Theology course is offered in conjunction with St Mark's National Theological Centre at Canberra.

These studies equip students to undertake lay religious ministry functions or to pursue ordination. Other career opportunities include chaplaincy in a variety of institutional settings, such as military, prisons, police, ambulance, trade and industry, or work in the social welfare arms of charities and the church, e.g. overseas development aid, communication functions, marriage and family counselling.

Candidates for ordination should consult with church authorities regarding any required patterns of study.

Course structure

The course requires the satisfactory completion of 192 subject credit points, normally comprising 24 subjects. The equivalent of 16 subjects are to be in theological fields. The degree can be structured in one of two ways:

Majors and minors are available in the disciplines listed.

Majors

A major is a group of eight subjects in the same discipline which requires the acquisition of both breadth and depth of knowledge in the discipline. Unless specified otherwise, two subjects must be studied at Level 1, at least two subjects at Level 2, and at least two subjects at Level 3.

Minors

A minor is a group of five subjects in the same discipline. Two subjects must be studied at Level 1, at least one subject at Level 2, and at least one subject at Level 3 (Unless specified).

Miscellaneous subjects may be taken from the major and minor areas and subject to some restrictions, from many other areas of study the University offers.
