Courses in the Faculty of Commerce

Bachelor of Business

Course structure

All Bachelor of Business students study eight prescribed foundation subjects that enable them to sample a variety of disciplines before going on to specialise in a choice of Accounting, Banking, Business Management, Economics, Finance, Human Resource Management, Industrial Relations, International Business Management, Marketing, Public Administration or Tourism Management. Students must successfully complete 24 subjects to graduate.

Students should check subject availability and prerequisites, as not all subjects are offered each session, or in both distance education and internal modes. Consult the Course Coordinator or Courses Manager.

For full-time students, a list of subjects on offer is available from Student Administration Centres. Distance education students will be mailed this list.

Bachelor of Business (Honours)

The Bachelor of Business (Honours) is designed to equip Honours graduates with advanced business related research skills in order to prepare them for further study at higher degrees level. The course is also designed to provide a competitive edge in gaining employment for graduates as they will have received advanced tuition in their selected specialist area which is one of the disciplines available through Charles Sturt University.

Study mode

Distance education

Normal course duration

Full-time on campus 1 year (2 sessions)
Part-time on campus 2 years (4 sessions)
Part-time distance education 2 years (4 sessions)

Admission criteria

Applicants should have obtained a degree in business or any double or combined degree from an Australian or approved overseas university that includes a major study in one of the specialised areas of business available for study through Charles Sturt University, and must have achieved that degree at a minimum of credit level. Only in exceptional circumstances will this requirement be waived by the Faculty of Commerce, and this waiver must have the approval of the Dean.

Course requirements

The Honours program requires the student to successfully complete the equivalent of eight subjects each of eight credit points. Each student will be required to complete the equivalent of three special topic area subjects, the parameters of which will be determined by the Course Coordinator with regard for the special interest areas of the student. Where appropriate the Course Coordinator may substitute a subject in the Masters program for a special topic area subject to develop a specific skill related to the student's area of interest and where that specific discipline has not been studied at undergraduate level. Where a subject in the Masters program is certified by the Course Coordinator to be entirely `add on' in nature to work completed at undergraduate level, that subject may be substituted for a special topic area subject where the discipline has been studied at undergraduate level.

Each student will be required to complete an Advanced Research Methods subject that develops skills in specific qualitative and advanced quantitative research techniques. Those students whose undergraduate program provides limited skill development in basic research methodology will also be required to complete a basic research methods subject as part of their Honours program. This basic research methods subject may be selected from Masters level discipline specific subjects such as HRM507 Research Methods or ACC540 Research Methodology.

As marketing students have completed QBM217 Advanced Business Statistics and MKT230 Marketing Research as part of their undergraduate program they will be allowed to enrol directly in MGT517 Advanced Research Methods. Those students required to complete a basic research methods subject as part of their Honours program will complete a Research Project to the satisfaction of the Course Coordinator and be equivalent to three subjects each of 8 credit points, whereas those students able to enrol directly in MGT517 Advanced Research Methods will complete a Research Project to the satisfaction of the Course Coordinator and be equivalent to four subjects each of 8 credit points.

The Bachelor of Business (Honours) degree may be awarded in the following classes: Class 1;

Bachelor of Business (International Business Management)

The International Business Management strand prepares graduates for employment in business organisations which conduct business across international boundaries. It builds upon the business disciplines of marketing, finance, economics, human resource management and industrial relations to provide advanced skills that are specific to the conducting of international commerce in both small-medium enterprises and large multinational corporations. The specialisation seeks to integrate cultural understandings with relevant functional skills.
