This subject contains a 5 day Compulsory Residential School.
The Bachelor of Paramedicine is currently an approved course with AHPRA. In aligning to the accreditation policy, face to face time is required when teaching and assessing clinical practice skills. The online subject and internal subject must have equity in teaching standards.
The purpose of the residential school is to demonstrate and practice clinical skills in a safe environment for the student, allowing them an opportunity to receive timely feedback and support from the hands on experience. BMS317 is an advanced paramedical skills subject that incorporates skills such as learning how to place an intraosseous needle, advanced airway management procedures and advanced clinical decision making. These skills require supervised reflective practice before allowing the student autonomy in the clinical environment. These skills may be practiced in isolation or as part of a high fidelity simulated environment with academic supervision on hand to provide feedback and guide clinical conversation to enhance the learning experience and address required outcomes.
Current activities that will be included into the residential school for BMS317 are:
- Engage in and discuss advanced clinical reasoning processes to enhance patient-centred care;
- Demonstrate safe and effective medical management of a patient with complex medical presentations;
- Demonstrate safe and autonomous and effective patient management in the medical environment;
- Perform advanced clinical interventions safely and effectively on medical patients;
- Demonstrate sound ethical and professional disposition including effective communication with patients, bystanders, the paramedic team, and other health care professionals; and
- Engage in reflective, evidence based practice activities to ensure optimal patient-centred care is understood and practiced.
