This subject is the first of a series of three subjects which focus on employability skills, personal skills and career planning. The subject has a particular emphasis on enhancing professional knowledge of working in a business environment, expanding on employability skills and building on work-integrated learning principles.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify personal examples of key employability skills, evaluate where personal skills require development and create a plan of action to show how skills will be developed;
  • be able to discuss the relationship between learning and career and life development, and apply this personally;
  • be able to identify professional, career and life choices, go on to develop a strategy to achieve these, begin to apply them and appraise their efficacy; and
  • be able to reflect on personal career and life choices.

  • Communication including types of business communication and negotiation
  • Teamwork and relationships in work and life
  • Problem solving and assertiveness
  • Self-management and learning
  • Planning and organising
  • The role of reflective practice
  • Locating and using information effectively to aid personal career development and networking
  • Understanding the relationship between self, work, society and the economy
  • Making career enhancing decisions and the role of mentors
