This subject introduces key practical and theoretical aspects of strategic business decision making. Students will understand how an organisation's mission, strategies and objectives provide an overarching framework for the development of the planning process. Students will undertake an in-depth situational analysis; considering theoretical business models such as sustainable competitive advantage and current industry trends. This approach allows for the development of innovative and entrepreneurial ways of thinking as well as knowledge and skills in the areas of strategic analysis, strategic choice and strategic implementation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to critically evaluate and apply theories of strategic planning;
  • be able to identify and differentiate between functional business units and evaluate how they should act conjointly to achieve organisation's strategic aims and objectives;
  • be able to assess the impact of contemporary industry issues including sustainability, diversity in markets and ethics on decision-makers; and
  • be able to develop and clearly communicate a strategic plan for a business.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • the nature of strategy;
  • analysis of external and internal factors affecting organisations;
  • contemporary issues facing decision-makers;
  • transforming data knowledge for decision-makers;
  • understanding the relationships between organisational business units;
  • tactical and operational decision-making; and
  • components of a strategic business planning.
