COM103 Media Production and Presentation (8)

Abstract

Provides an introduction to a range of professional production issues and procedures. Practical workshops and group-based research projects are designed to introduce and develope a range of physical, interpersonal and presentational skills. Students develop their understanding of production practices and test their knowledge by planning the presentation of workshop-based production tasks. The impact of different professional contexts upon diversely framed presetnations is examined. Studies address changing patterns of media activity. How communicators are challenged by emergent technologies provides a focus for dialogue.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
Understand professional cross-media contexts, models, craft roles, and procedures for professional production.
Demomstrate a range of skills which enhance the interpersonal, vocal, and presentational dimension of effective communication.
Critically articulate their analysis of a range of presentational styles which can be observed in contempory Australian communication contexts.
Contribute as effective collaborators in production procedures which presents sound and lighting for live indoor performances, live mic public address, video recordings of studio interviews and auto-cue readings.
Critically articulate their concept of persona re: how frames of depictive and real-life action might be conceived, enacted, read.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
Media cultures, production practices, and convergent technology trends. Production planning and rehearsal issues re: live performance, auto-cue reading, studio interview, and live mic public address. Voice as Persona: presentation of self and "self in-role"; Attitudes to voice and text: energy, imagery and sound. Physical presence: body alignment, body language, gesture, and breath control for professional communicators.
