COM118 Media Production & Presentation 1 (8)

Abstract

This subject introduces participants to a range of media production procedures and presentational issues associated with digital media production, mediated seminar presentations, situated role communication and live performance. It develops core production, presentation and digital media competencies that prepare undergraduates for COM119 and second and third level subjects in all strands of the BA (Communication).

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to articulate an historically contextualised analysis of a range of media technologies, presentational styles and communication conventions that can be identified across forms of Australian electronic media throughout the past century
- be able to critically discuss how social communication initiatives all use the concepts of frame and framings, dramatic role conventions and aesthetic distance to facilitate different types of communication transactions with live and mediated audiences
- be able to cooperatively interact with others as an effective collaborator in the development of multiple projects; from initial concept through to mediated live performances and submission of post-production reports
- be able to plan and present well-researched, problem-posing briefings on a range of communication topics and use situated role performances to present a persuasive rhetoric that communicates passion and enthusiasm for the topic discussed.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- social constructivist strategies for effective teamwork that emphasise critical thinking through co-intentional dialogue; especially, where these tasks promote the application of critical reasoning, critical self-reflection and collaborative cultural action through presentational tasks; - basic manipulation of image, sound, and text in a digital environment; - software tools for presentations and situated role performances; - planning and presentational issues for media productions, live performances, and professional presentations.
