Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to critically evaluate the impact of technological developments on traditional/historical approaches to communication in their field
  • be able to consider the behaviour changes required by all parties in the creation and dissemination of digital communication content, at individual, local, national and global levels, as well as alternative non-digital forms
  • be able to locate the practice of communication as a global (or local)/digital (or non-digital) phenomenon, and relate this to their particular research project
  • be able to speculate about the impact of impending technological/digital changes (positive and negative) on their field of practice

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • The effect of digital/global technology and channels on communication practices, individually, locally, nationally and globally
  • The evolution of communications practices and technologies over time
  • The skilling and de-skilling of communicators through technological changes over time and space
  • Changing relationships between communicators and audiences regarding channels and content
  • The ethics of communication in changing times
