DOH415 Orthodontics and Paediatric Dentistry (8)

This subject will focus on the integration of the specialist discipline areas of paediatric dentistry and orthodontics. Students will gain the requisite skills in diagnosis, treatment planning and case selection for general practitioner level paediatric and orthodontic care as well as an appropriate understanding of the referral pathways essential for optimal paediatric and orthodontic specialist treatment. This subject is designed to provide students with full development of skills necessary to provide more complex and comprehensive clinical care for adults, teenagers and children as they further develop their knowledge of growth and development from earlier years.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate the knowledge and clinical skills required for the examination, diagnosis, treatment planning and dental treatment for children;
  • be able to recall and apply the specific behaviour management strategies required for the provision of optimal oral health care for children;
  • be able to demonstrate continuing development of clinical competency relevant to the management of dental treatment for children; and
  • be able to demonstrate basic orthodontics knowledge relevant to general dental practice, with particular focus on diagnosis, case selection and referral of patients.

  • Assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning for orthodontics;
  • Craniofacial imaging in orthodontics;
  • Genetics and orthodontics;
  • Bone physiology, metabolism and biomechanics in orthodontic practice;
  • Biomaterials in orthodonotics;
  • Functional appliances;
  • Treatment of patients in mixed dentition;
  • Periodontal/orthodontic interrelationships;
  • Orthodontic aspects of orthognathic surgery;
  • The orthodontist's role in a cleft palate-craniofacial team;
  • Introduction to paediatric behavioural and management strategies;
  • Introduction to clinical paediatric dentistry;
  • Paediatric behavioural and management strategies; and
  • Clinical paediatric dentistry.
