DOH553 Surgical Implant Dentistry (16)

In this subject students will be exposed to concepts in implant surgery and develop skills in the surgical placement of implants. The necessary preparation of the dental operatory, selection of surgical instrumentation, and training of support staff will all be discussed.  The steps involved in the placement of dental implants in the correct, restoratively-driven positions will be described and this information reinforced in clinical simulations.

Enrolment Restrictions

Enrolment is restricted to students in the Graduate Diploma of Dental Implantology.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to describe the process of osseointegration;
  • be able to design and construct surgical templates;
  • be able to describe, select and use the specialised instrumentation used in implant dentistry;
  • be able to discuss and apply dental infection control policies and aseptic techniques relevant to implant surgery;
  • be able to train support staff to facilitate implant treatments;
  • be able to demonstrate advanced radiographic interpretation skills;
  • be able to demonstrate high level treatment planning and communication skills in a case presentation involving the provision of an implant-supported/retained prosthesis; and
  • be able to demonstrate autonomy and high-level judgement and technical skills in placing dental implants in simulation models.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Surgical principles used in implant dentistry;
  • Suturing techniques used in oral surgery;
  • Sterility and asepsis in the dental surgery;
  • Osseointegration;
  • Surgical placement of dental implants;
  • Introductory grafting techniques used in implant dentistry; and
  • Pharmacological and medical implications of implant dentistry.

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 14 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

Students will be expected to spend approximately 1 day per week in the preparation and commencement of their clinical cases. The time allocation to this task will vary depending on the individual case complexity.

Residential School

This subject contains a 6 day Compulsory Residential School.

Students are required to attend two 3-day workshops at the Australian Dental Association (NSW Branch) Centre for Professional Development in Sydney.  The workshops include lectures, tutorials and practical tasks providing students with the opportunity to interact with experts in the various areas of dental implantology.

Special Resources

Students are responsible for travel and accommodation for attendance at the face-to-face workshops at the ADA NSW Continuing Professional Development facilities in Sydney.
